The momentum continues with the Hoffmann Family of Companies’ vision to revitalize the charm and history of Augusta, Missouri, making it into a destination rivaling the nation’s most prestigious wine regions with the addition of two wineries and 250 acres of vineyards.
The Hoffmanns have successfully purchased both the Montelle and Augusta Wineries and 250 additional acres of vineyards property from Tony and Cindy Kooyumjian. This is the largest single-owned winery and vineyards in Augusta and the third largest in the state. The Augusta Winery has several locations including their production buildings and tasting room, office building, and cellars at 5601 High St.; Owl’s Nest Hospitality Building at 266 Jackson St. and adjacent 1.5-acre lot; Wine & Beer Gardens at 5625 High St.; three lots off Locust St and a storage building off Jackson St.
Montelle Winery located on Highway 94 has a tasting room, event center, hospitality house, storage building, and is situated on approximately 50 acres; additionally the company purchased vineyards, houses, garage and barn on 100
acres at 550 Crow Creek Lane as well as 100 additional acres off 375 Crow Creek Lane including its vineyards, houses and barns. In addition to this transaction, the company is under contract to purchase another downtown Augusta building at 300 Jackson St. These transactions dovetail with previous company announcements of plans to highlight the charm, history and community surrounding the first designated AVA (American Viticultural Area) in America, a national destination. Plans to build a luxury hotel and spa, corporate center, golf course, trolley tours, steam boat tours, horse and buggy rides, and many more attractions add to the overall vision for the Hoffmann’s.
The company announced in early January that it had purchased the 53 acre Knoernschild Vineyard, Balducci Vineyards, and several downtown Augusta buildings, including the history Augusta Wine Company building and cellar which is already undergoing its restoration. Additional plans are in the work to make improvements to the city’s playground and build a public restroom facility with acquisitions continuing into April. Activity in Augusta has already begun with the arrival of two vintage trolleys and multiple classic Chevy trucks placed throughout town.
The company commented, “We continue discussions with other vineyards that we hope we will successfully acquire by April’s end.” Also, the company plans to extend its trolley/bus service to Washington, MO, where they own an 80-acre vineyard and plan to build a tasting room. In addition, there are talks of a possible addition of a 2nd steamboat departing from Washington’s Front St. where discussions with city officials have been welcoming and exciting
In total, the Hoffmann Family of Companies has now purchased almost 500 acres and operate three winery brands, Balducci, Montelle, and Augusta with the Washington Vines tasting room to be built soon. Although the winery and vineyard purchases all fall under the Hoffmann Family of Companies umbrella, each winery will continue to be unique and hold its own label. When complete, the company will be the largest single owner of vineyards and wineries in the Midwest, with over 700 acres.
